The Gateway Society
The Gateway Society has been established as a means by which we can thank during their lifetime Old Albanians and other supporters who have chosen to make a gift to St Albans School in their will. Any gift to a registered charity made in your will, whether in the form of cash, shares, property or other items, is exempt from inheritance tax. Legacy giving enables many people who are ‘asset-rich' rather than ‘cash-rich' to make a meaningful contribution to future generations of pupils at St Albans School.
By informing the Development Office that you have made a bequest to the School, you will automatically become a member of The Gateway Society - there is no obligation to disclose the size or nature of your gift. Members receive a specially designed silk tie, their names are inscribed into the Society's ‘Register' which is on display at the School, and they receive invitations to School and Foundation functions and the Society's annual dinner. A wish for anonymity will of course be respected.
There are many different ways in which you can make a bequest, and a brochure with more detailed information and suggested wordings for your will is available from the Development Office. As everyone's estate is different, it is important that you seek independent legal advice before drawing up or making any changes to your will.
To request a copy of the brochure The Gateway Society: The Gift of Education please e-mail the Development Office.
A Gateway Society Member: Andy Barnes (OA 1957-1964)
In common with a growing number of Old Albanians I have made a bequest to St Albans School in my will. There is a strong feeling of satisfaction in guaranteeing that something will be given back to the School in recognition of all it gave to me. To ensure that St Albans continues to be recognised as being amongst the leading schools in the country it needs support well beyond parents' fees.
For those of you who have yet to consider making provision for the School in your will, and many who have thought of it but not quite got round to doing so, please take action - make your own bequest and in doing so, join The Gateway Society as a member for life, (a long one I hope!).
This decisive step by Old Albanians early in the 21st century follows hundreds of years of well documented benefaction and will ensure that necessary investment in capital projects in the decades to come can be sustained.
